What is Reclaiming Civility?

Reclaiming Civility is a mission-driven organization dedicated to equipping individuals, professionals, and communities with the skills to communicate effectively, navigate conflict, and build stronger relationships. Through expert-led trainings and workshops, we help people cultivate respect and connection in personal, professional, and civic life.

What are civility skills?

Civility skills are new habits we can form to embody the disposition of civility, which, according to Alexandra Hudson, is “a disposition that recognizes and respects the common humanity, the fundamental personhood, and the inherent dignity of other human beings.” The brain is very malleable, meaning we can change and grow through learning these skills. They range from understanding and managing our own thoughts and emotions and empathizing with others to introductory conversation, developing rapport, and reducing conflict to the power of please and thank you.

What will I learn in a Reclaiming Civility training?

You’ll gain practical tools and strategies in effective communication and active listening, emotional intelligence and self-awareness, etiquette and navigating difficult conversations, and relationship-building and fostering mutual respect.

Can I book a training for my team or organization?

Absolutely! We offer tailored workshops for teams, businesses, schools, nonprofits, and community groups. Contact us to discuss your goals and we’ll create a customized program.

Do you recommend any books or videos?

Yes, we have compiled a list of our favorite reads and watches on our resources page. They contain a wealth of information and background information on civility.

Who leads the trainings?

Our workshops are led by experienced educators and facilitators, including co-founders Lisa Brandt and Lori Leander, who bring decades of experience in leadership development, emotional intelligence, and community engagement.

Why is civility important today?

Civility is more than politeness—it’s about recognizing the value in every person, even in disagreement. In a time of increasing polarization and communication breakdown, civility skills foster understanding, strengthen relationships, and create more respectful, resilient communities.

Who are your trainings for?

Our trainings are designed for:

  • Individuals looking to improve relationships and feel more confident in social interactions.
  • Workplaces seeking to improve team dynamics, collaboration, and avoiding unnecessary  conflict.
  • Communities aiming to bridge divides and foster engagement across differences.

How are your workshops different from other communication or etiquette trainings?

Unlike traditional etiquette courses, we focus on the deeper mindset and skills of civility—respect, empathy, and human dignity. Our trainings apply to all areas of life, not just professional settings, and are grounded in personal growth, community engagement, and emotional intelligence.

Do you have upcoming events?

Yes, we lead and participate in summits, ongoing series, and private events. You can see what’s coming up by visiting our events page.

What kind of impact can I expect?

After our trainings, participants report more confidence in difficult conversations, stronger personal and professional relationships, increased empathy and understanding, and a renewed sense of hope for bridging divides in their communities
